In & Around Agumbe
Sunset Point
Sunset Point, also known as the Sunset View Point, is located on one of the highest peaks of the Western Ghats and provides views of the setting sun on the horizon of the Arabian Sea. This point is situated at the 14th hair-pin bend of the mountainous road that leads to Agumbe. It can be reached by a 10 minute walk from Agumbe village.
Onake Abbi Falls
The Onake Abbi Falls is located at a trek distance of around 8 km from Agumbe. The falls derives its name from the word Onake, meaning a pounding stick that is used for pounding grains in villages. From here, beautiful views of the valleys of Agumbe can be seen.
Barkana Falls
The Barkana Falls, at a height of around 850 ft, is the 11th highest waterfall in India. It is located amidst the thick and dense forest areas of the Western Ghats. The Seeta River that flows through the region forms this waterfall. The falls derives its name from ‘barka’, which refers to the mouse deer living nearby. The Barkana View Point near the falls presents beautiful views of the Ghats and its adjoining hill slopes.
Kundadri Hills
The Kundadri Hills is situated in the Thirthahalli Taluk of Shimoga District, at an average elevation of about 3,200 ft above sea level. This hill is a monolithic rock formation dotted with thick forests and numerous streams.
The hill is known for an ancient Jain Temple that is believed to be constructed in the 17th century. The Tunga River reaches the site and fills two small ponds formed by rocks. The beautiful view of backwaters of the Varahi Dam and mountains attract numerous tourists, especially nature lovers.
Jogigundi Falls
The Jogigundi Falls is located around 3 km from Agumbe. Situated on the way to the Barkana Falls, it can be reached on foot in 10 to 15 minutes. The falls derives its name from the word Jogi, as it is believed that a Jogi or saint meditated inside the cave near the falls.
The falls originates from a small pond that is filled by the water of the Malapahaari River. The water of the pond finally reaches down the valley and merges with River Tunga.
Gopalakrishna Temple
The Gopalakrishna Temple is a 14th century temple that is known for its beautiful sculptures. Representing the Hoysala art and architectural style, the temple is believed to be constructed by the erstwhile Karnataka rulers. Located on a hill near Agumbe, the temple is accessible only on foot.
